British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of entry passages down to the depot... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as ISIS - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "They were among a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
